What Is Deep Drawing?

There are all kinds of different metalworking processes that get used to make all the various things that go into modern life. One of those processes is deep drawing. That may sound like something that someone does with some coloring books and crayons, but deep drawing has nothing to do with that. You probably see a lot more products that are made through this process than you think that you do.

Deep Drawing

Deep drawing involves taking a piece of metal and introducing it to dies to get a final shape. The way that it works is that the piece of metal is pulled over on top of a die, and then a punch comes down and presses the metal into the die. There may be additional steps so that the appropriate shape is formed. For example, a flange or a neck may be added to the production piece after the initial shape is formed. The deep part of deep drawing means that the depth of the piece is deeper than its diameter is. An example of this is a metal water bottle. The water bottle is deeper, or taller in this case than it is wide. Other examples of deep draw products include things like sinks and cable connectors.

Benefits of Deep Drawing

There are several benefits to using the deep draw process to form various products. One of them includes the fact that it is a relatively quick process. The stamp and die are able to apply the pressure and create the piece much quicker than someone could do it by hand. Another reason is that it is generally a more precise process than other manufacturing processes. Since everything is automatic, including the amount of pressure the machine is placing on the metal, there is very little risk of any kind of error through human intervention. Since the part is formed through a stamp and die, the first piece produced will be the same as the 100th and 1000th piece. If a very small tolerance is necessary for any part, then the deep drawing process can make sure that the piece is made within that very strict tolerance level.

Deep drawing can make it easier to form certain kinds of products and make sure that they are made within very precise measurements. It is a fairly easy process that can produce various kinds of shapes and forms. Contact a company like Precision Stamping for more information and assistance.
